Visitor gave heads up on that. Thanks! New alloy - Aichi ZA-18 steel. Apparently created to compete and outperform Takefu VG-10 steel. Slightly more Carbon, Chrome, Cobalt and Molybdenum. One thing I am not clear is the Vanadium content. VG-10 contains 0.10% to 0.30% which besides refining grain can affect abrasive wear resistance, but in those amounts probably not so much. I'm trying ot get more precise information.

My first knife from William Henry, and the deciding factor was the Hitachi ZDP-189 steel. Classic gentleman's folder, very high quality and craftsmanship, hi-tech materials from blade to handle, and to complement all that, super duper blade steel. Details in the review. Very positive results and I am very happy with the knife. ZDP-189 is not brittle, and that was covered in Super Hard vs. Soft Edges article.

Added Hitachi proprietary HAP 10 high speed tool steel composition. There are several other HAP series steels made by Hitachi. All high speed tool steels, som eproprietary, others similar to AISI M series high speed steels, the difference with HAP 10 is that it doens't contain Cobalt unlike its other HAP brothers.

It's been well over 5 years, that's the oldest email I found, but it was quite a while before that, since I Have sent it for a simple rehandling job to Dan Koster. For a while I forgot, then numerous emails were exchanged, every time I was assured next week, almost there... Very frustrating and negative experience overall. Haven't had anything like this with any knife makers and I've worked with a lot of them, across the globe. Well, at least I have my knife back, rehandled, no visible flaws in the work. Although, after so many years, I have changed my preferences, don't even like it that much.
