MM Hybrid Cryo(Bohler-Uddeholm) - Hybrid Cryo steel was developed in collaboration between Midgards Messer and Bohler Austria circa 2024. Designed as a dedicated cutlery steel, which is always a welcome news for knife enthusiasts. Overall, according to marketing materials, one of they key goals was to get as close as possible to PM steel performance without using PM technology making Hybrid Cryo more cost effective. Other highlights from marketing include good corrosion resistance, ease of sharpening, and positions it as a high toughness tool steel. Additional benefits include ease of machining and problem free jet and laser cutting. All the later are more interesting to the makers, but end users should also benefit form cost reduction, I guess that depends on the individual maker, whether or not benefits are passed on or how substantial those will be. First production knives using Hybrid Cryo appeared in 2025. The word Cryo in the steel name indicates the use of cryo during heat treatment process. Typically that benefits most of the steels. In this case as I understand, cryo is a standard step in Midgards Messer's HT protocol. Working hardness 58-62HRC post cryo. I haven't seen reports on its performance, not yet anyway(summer 2026). I'll update the record once I get more data.
