Nitro-X7(Buderus Edelstahlwerke) - Nitro-X7 first appeared in late 2024. It is a nitrogen?alloyed stainless martensitic knife steel produced by Buderus Edelstahlwerke. Nitro-X7 is relative of the earlier, well known and popular knife steels Nitro-V and Nitro-B. Knifemaker KKnives described Nitro-X7 as Nitro-V on steroids. Buderus themselves, describes it as a knife steel, and a success of merging two different lines of development. Those would be the same Nitro-V and Nitro-B mentioned above. Nitro-X7 features very fine, dense mix of carbides and nitrides. Given the presence of nitrides and 0.70% Carbon combined with 15%+ Chromium, the Nitro-X7 steel is quite stain resistant. It is a stainless steel in common classification by all means. High working hardness, 63-64HR combined with excellent edge stability provides for a high performance, thin edge capabilities. Abrasive wear resistance isn't as high as in other alloys such as CPM S90V or CPM S110V, but those alloys are in a different category and usage group. As per Buderus, at 63HRC edge stability on conventional cutting mediums is on par with more expensive PM steels. In part those claims were confirmed by KKnives tests. Also, Buderus highlights improved or easier workability compared to PM steels. I can see that when comparing with very high Vanadium content steels too. I'd definitely want to high performance cutter made out of the Nitro-X7 or perhaps a kitchen knife too. Given it's properties it should do well in a thin edged kitchen knife. Overall, welcome addition to ever growing, dedicated knife steel alloys.
